Mieczysław Gaja

Sculpture

Mieczysław Gaja  has been involved in folk crafts since 1976. It is an activity he loves with all his heart and is grounded in family tradition. Mr Gaja’s  master teacher is his father-in-law, Wacław Suska who has given direction to Mieczysław’s interest in sculpture.  Mieczysław carves in lime wood. His main tools are chisel, axe, knife and saw. his scuplture ares principally made of one piece of lime wood. The themes of his sculptures  result from Mieczysław’s reflections, and his sacral sculptures are inspired by Old and New Testament. In 1982 he became a member of Folk Artists’ Association. He has won many regional and Poland-wide competitions. He has received many awards, including the Silver and Golden Crosses of Merit, the medal “For Merit in Service to Polish culture” and “Gloria Artis” for Merit to Culture.
