The Wonders – film
Director: Alice Rohrwacher
2014, drama, 111′
Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival, it charmed the jury members Jane Campion and Sophia Coppola and moved Nicholas Winding Refn to tears. “The Wonders” by the young director Alice Rohrwacher is based on her experience of growing up in an eccentric family in a big, old house in Tuscany.
When the summer ends, nothing will be the same for Gelsomina and her three younger sisters. The girl lives away from civilization, in a secluded place deep in the Italian province where tourists are rare. Her parents, former hippies, moved here to live closer to nature and protect their children from the “end of the world”.
Like every year, the family will spend this summer making honey, which hardly suffices to let them make ends meet. However, the strict rules imposed by her father will relax for the first time. Gelsomina dreams about saving her family from bankruptcy and win the main prize in the TV competition show hosted by the mysterious Milly Catena (Monica Bellucci). Even though it stands in complete opposition to the views and values that her father has tried to teach her, the girl will bend over backwards to convince him to this idea.
