“Roztocze Stones of memory. Folk stonework from Józefów”
The exhibition created by Towarzystwo dla Natury i Człowieka focuses on the Roztocze centre of folk stonework which has operated in Józefów since the 18th century. Wayside shrines, crosses and graves made of Józefów limestone are the most commonplace and the most characteristic cultural element of landscape in the Zamość region. The works of Józefów masters are found across a large area, extending from Włodzimierz Wołyński to Janów Lubelski. The exhibition also presents social initiatives aimed at preserving Józefów’s historic gravestones in neglected cemeteries upon the Bug river.
