Singing Workshop with Iryna Klymenko

One of the more recognizable singers and musicologists specializing in the ethnic music of Ukraine, the head of the Problem Research Laboratory of Musical Ethnography. In the years 1984-204 she was the soloist in DREVO band and between 1993-2003, the frontwoman of the youth band VOLODAR. Between 1992-1995 she was a member of the Ukrainian-French band DIAKOUYOU. In 2002 she set up  Hurtopravci, a band playing traditional music.

Since 1986 she has been recording authentic folk singers, mostly from villages in northern Ukraine (e.g. Pripyat basin, Podlasie, areas around Chernihiv). She recorded nearly 300 indigenes, collecting over 300 hours of recordings (around 15 thousand songs and ethnographic descriptions). Iryna Klymenko also contributed to the recording of such folk rituals as the celebration in honour of the Holy Trinity, Kupala Night and performances of traditional singers. Since 2007, she has been organizing many ethnographic concerts in Kiev.

Iryna Klymenko has conducted international workshops dedicated to Ukrainian singing in Poland (Warsaw, Wrocław, Lublin 1998-2007), and Estonia (2005). Since 1993 she has been lecturing on Ukrainian traditional music and singing at the National Pedagogical University in Kiev.
